Small Business Week 2017!
Small Business Week in the USA is April 30- May 6, 2017. Co-President and CEO of Alert Management Systems, Kara Lawrence, was interviewed by payroll processing giant Paychex about our small business management software and its impact on the small business community.
Paychex: Tell us your business story. How did you get started and why?
Alert: Alert Management Systems has been in business for over 40 years. My business partner and I purchased the company from the previous owners in September of 2016. The owners were nearing retirement age and had interest from software consolidators, some of whom have poor reputations in our industry. Rather than send their life’s work to the wolves, they accepted an offer from us and we’re happily carrying on the tradition of Superior Rental Technology.
Paychex: What does being an American small business mean to you?
Alert: We’re a small, but integral, part of the American culture. My colleagues and I work so hard for other small businesses, which have enormous impacts on the economy in general. Our industry is primarily small-business focused! We are software developers for the rental industry, mostly party/event and general/heavy equipment. Our clients rely on our software to manage their entire operations, and their end users are satisfied businesses, government agencies, or general consumers. Our small team has an indirect hand in thousands of transactions, events, projects, and happy endings all over the USA.!
Paychex: More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year. What does it mean to you to be contributing to the overall health of the economy in that way?
Alert: Our Business is growing – we’ve added 15% to our workforce this year. Not only does that make the American economy in general more robust, it helps our local community of Colorado Springs. As long as folks continue to rent things, the health of our small business will continue to make a small but meaningful impact on the economy. While our impact on the economy is small, we have an enormous impact on the lives of our employees, as well as our clients. We strive to be a place where our employees want to be, which then shines through on our customer care, and our clients will then be able to have positive interactions with their own clients. We’re making the world a better place, one person at a time!
